About Nice

There are many good and affordable restaurants in Nice and the kitchen differs some from the rest of France, with clear influences from the Italian food culture - many claim that the typical Italian pasta ravioli was invented here in Nice.

Local specialties such as Socca (a thin pancake made from chickpea flour), Pissaladière (an onion- and anchovies tart) and of course Salad Nicoise (tuna, egg and anchovy) coexist nicely with Italian pasta and pizza.

The cuisine of Nice is traditionally robust and simple food since Provence, not too many years ago, was a relatively poor region. As well known, the situation has changed a bit and now there are no less than 39 restaurants with Michelin stars within a radius of twenty kilometers from Nice. Best is Alain Ducasse with his three-star Le Louis XV, but many think that Joël Robuchons star hangout Monte-Carlo is a bit better although it lacks the last star - good and expensive is it anyway ..

Fortunately, you don´t need to be ruined for eating both good and affordable meals when you visit Nice. There are dozens of restaurants and bistros in various price ranges and many serving excellent cuisine based on local ingredients. If you leave the busiest tourist trails the price drop a little bit but maybe not as much as you might expect. A normal lunch with a glass of rosé often lands around € 15-20 per person, and add on an additional € 10 for a simple dinner. Best value is of course to eat the plat du jour or a formule (daily specials), which often includes a starter, main course and dessert.

If you are on a tight budget there are of course alternatives. A variant for lunch is to buy chilled wine or beer at the local store along with a ready-made baguette for hardly no money at all, and then picnic on the beach. An alternative to dinner at the restaurant is home delivery, livraison, which is widespread in Nice and it's easy and cheap to get home pizzas and sushi even if it is late in the evening.

Many restaurants open for lunch around 12 noon and keep open for a few hours, and then reopen again around 7pm when dinner starts. The previous strict lunch time has slowly loosened up and many of the restaurants along the pedestrian street keep open from early morning to late evening.

Naturally there are also loads of tourist traps in a city like Nice, but if you are a little selective, there are several really good restaurants in the area of the old town and around the pedestrian zone in the centre.

Chez Acchiardo

Incredibly popular restaurant serving traditional niçois food with a really good service. Long table is what counts, so be prepared to interact with the locals!

The same northern Italian family has owned the restaurant for generations, and although the restaurant is featured in all the guidebooks, it is surprisingly cheap and prices for a main course starts at around € 10.

Unfortunately, the restaurant is closed Saturdays and Sundays and other days advance booking is a must.

It is not possible to pay by credit card so don´t forget to bring cash if you dislike doing the dishes...

Les Amoureux

Despite the position near the harbor Les Amoureux was for long ranked the best restaurant in Nice, according to Tripadvisor.

Certainly this is not Nice's best restaurant, but they make damn good pizza!

Les Amoureux does not have many tables (about 30 seats) and it is absolutely necessary to reserve a table during peak periods.

Les Amoureux is unfortunately not open for lunch. Take away (à emporter) works and the pizzas remain hot enough to be enjoyed on the terrace!

Chez Davia

Chez Davia is a terrific restaurant located 80 meters from the apartment.

The restaurant is truly French, and the guests are mostly locals.

Madame is a bit special and that is one of the reasons that Chez Davia must be visited.
Incredibly affordable, a three-course menu costs around €26 and lunch menues around €15.

After 20:00 all tables tend to be occupied.

Restaurant d'Angleterre is a French family restaurant, incredibly affordable with three-course menus from € 16 - € 30.

The portions are huge so leave some neat part of the starter so you have room for the entire menu.

The restaurant has 15 or so outdoor seats which should preferably be booked the day before.
Address: 25 Rue Angleterre, Phone: +33 (0) 4 93 88 64 49

Chez Palmyr

Incredibly popular restaurant serving traditional niçois food with a really good service.
Unpretentious, simple, good and cheap!

Mostly local people and the restaurant fills up quickly after opening for lunch and dinner.

Affordable - proper lunch for € 10 and a three course meal for just over € 20.
Address: 5 rue Droite, Phone: +33 (0) 4 93 85 72 32

La Favola

La Favola is located at the corner of Cours Saleya and is basically the only restaurant worth mentioning on Cours Saleya.

Unfortunately it is not possible to pre-book a table, but once you are in place they do have a waiting list and within no more than 30 minutes you will have a table.

The portions are huge so skip the appetizer and aim for the main courses. The Seafood pasta is really worth the wait!
Address: 13 crs Saleya, Phone: +33 (0) 4 93 04 45 23

Villa d'Este

Villa d'Este is one of the better restaurants in the pedestrian area and the queues are mostly long - even in absolute off-season.

Really good pizza and pasta but their signature dish is the Antipasto. Do not make the mistake and ordering it as an appetizer as it is gigantic - share, or eat as a main course!
Address: 6 rue Masséna (zone piétonne), Phone: +33 (0) 4 93 82 47 77

Il Vicoletto

Il Vicoletto is a really good Italian restaurant with a ridiculously good linguini served with vongole mussels

If the shellfish is discarded their pizzas are of the highest caliber.
Address: 6 Rue de France, Phone: +33 (0) 4 93 87 30 55

La Petit Maison

La Petit Maison is one of the more famous restaurants in Nice, relatively prestigious.

Fashionable and crowded with celebrities! The food is very good and expensive…

The service varies from day to day.
Address: 11, rue Saint François de Paule, Phone: +33 (0) 4 93 92 59 59

After a visit to the restaurant's website, one can quickly conclude that the loud and jovial owner have much more talent as a cook than a web designer.

Portovenere serves simple and tasty food! Located on Rue Halevy (a stone's throw from the pedestrian street) makes it possible to get a table even during the absolute peak season.

Try their delicious Tagliata Manzo di rucola e parmigiano - sliced beef on a bed of rocket salad, served with parmensan and lemon.
Address: 12, Rue Halevy, Phone: +33 (0) 4 93 88 24 92

Le Socrate

Just wonderful! Le Socrate is a great Lebanese restaurant in the center of Nice.

Service is excellent and the food is really great - I don´t think I ever tasted this good falafel in my life.

The set menus are price worthy and I can recommend the Menu Socrate for €20 - a great Meze and I can promise that you will not leave hungry.
Address: 2, Rue de Suisse, Phone: +33 (0) 4 93 82 24 72

Mama delices

An affordable Greek restaurant located at the beginning of Rue Massenet.

The kitchen is traditional Greek and the food is well cooked.

There are plenty of outdoor tables and it is relatively easy to get a table even during the summer months.

Service is quick and friendly.
Address: 10 Rue Massenet, Tel. +33 (0) 4 93 01 24 02

Gelateria Azzurro

Italian ice cream is extremely popular in Nice. It is not cheap but the ice cream and sorbets are very well made and there is often some 50 different flavors to choose from.

Most popular among the tourists is undoubtedly Fenocchio in Place Rosetti but me myself prefer Gelateria Azzurro that is located a stone's throw away on Rue Ste Repo Rate.

Hotel Negresco

Naturally Nice pride is worth a mention, the Hotel Negresco.

The hotel has two expensive and good restaurants, the two-star Le Chantecler and the slightly more humane priced La Rotonde Brasserie.

If you don´t want to eat it is recommended to visit their nice bar, Le Relais, which serves nice chilled bubbly and well-made cocktails. Shorts are no-no after 5pm...
